Defence minister supports fact finding team to look at May riots

Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu supports forming a joint fact-finding team to investigate the May 21-22 riots in front of the Election Supervisory Agency building in Jakarta, provided that all parties in the investigation remain neutral.

Jakarta (ANTARA) -
Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu supports forming a joint fact-finding team to investigate the May 21-22 riots in front of the Election Supervisory Agency building in Jakarta, provided that all parties in the investigation remain neutral.

"Persons involved must be impartial. They must be mentally and morally good. But if they just go here and there, they are dangerous," he said, after attending a closed-door meeting between the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) and the House of Representatives' Commission I here on Wednesday.

Ryacudu added that the fact finding team must actually seek out the truth, instead of only finding faults. "If the team tries to find mistakes, there will always be mistakes, there might be nothing right," added the former Army chief of staff.

The police, he said, also have the ability to impose an article to enforce the law in investigating the riot case.

Previously, deputy house speaker Fadli Zon urged the government to immediately form a fact finding team to thoroughly investigate the riots of May 21-22, 2019.

He conveyed the proposal directly after chairing the House Plenary Meeting in Jakarta on Tuesday (June 11, 2019).
