Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has granted financial aid worth US$1 million to the Archipelagic Island State (AIS) Forum as part of its commitment to addressing climate change.

The grant was channeled to the forum through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Panjaitan stated in Jakarta on Tuesday.

"We allocated US$1 million. The fund has reached the UNDP that will top up the funding. The secretariat will arrange it to make it work soon," he remarked after signing a document with UNDP representative for Indonesia Christophe Bahuet at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs.

Panjaitan remarked that the funding will be directed for programs aimed at addressing the threat of climate change in archipelagic states.

"Archipelagic states face several problems with the rise in the earth's temperature. The islands may vanish from the face of earth. The archipelagic states have a population of 10 thousand, 20 thousand, and 100 thousand. We will contribute to them," he stated.

The contribution came not only in the form of funding but also scientific exchange . For instance, Indonesia has shared its experiences in mangrove forest farming and training of human resources.

"In fact, we have done it. Now, we only make it formal," he remarked.

In the meantime, Bahuet affirmed that the UNDP fully supported the Indonesian commitment to addressing the challenge of climate change.

"For us, the Archipelagic Island State forum is proof of the Indonesian commitment to achieve SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and address the threat of climate change," he added. Related news: Indonesia to experience temperature increase from 2020 - 2030: BMKG
