Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI) General Chairman Jimly Asshiddiqie expressed his condolences at the passing of Indonesia's third president, BJ Habibie, saying that he was an inspiration for the country's future generation.

"With deepest condolences for the passing of BJ Habibie, I pray for him. May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala bestow him with 'husnul khotimah' (with blessings ahead)," he told ANTARA here Wednesday evening. The death of Habibie, who was internationally renowned for his excellence in aerospace engineering and for his valuable contribution to planting the seeds of Indonesia's democracy and freedom of the press, is the greatest loss for the nation, he said.

Due to Habibie's excellence and great contribution to the country, Asshiddiqie appealed to members of Indonesia's young generation to keep him in their hearts and minds.

The former president passed away at 6.05 p.m. Wednesday at the age of 83 at the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital (RSPAD) where he was being treated by the best medical doctors, including those from the Presidential Doctor Team, since September 1.

The news was conveyed by Habibie's son Thareq Kemal Habibie.

The family of the third president of Indonesia, including his two sons and grandchildren, gathered at the hospital.

President Joko Widodo arrived at the hospital to convey his condolences to the family.

Habibie was born in Pare Pare, South Sulawesi on June 25, 1936 and led the country from May 1998 to October 1999.

Habibie's wife, Hasri Ainun Habibie, passed away in 2010 at a hospital in Germany.
