Jakarta (ANTARA) -

The Formula E electric auto race will be held on June 6, 2020, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan announced during the game's pre-event, Jakarta E Prix 2020, at the National Monument here on Friday.

Some areas of the National Monument complex, according to the Governor, would be used during the race.

"By contributing as the host of the 2020 Formula E, we would like to see Jakarta at a similar level with other metropolis and modern cities that are able to organize an international event," Baswedan noted.

With less than eight months until the race, Baswedan has appointed the city-owned Jakpro construction firm as the organizer.

"For me, this race is more than a sports event, as the 2020 Formula E may serve as part of our sport tourism programs. I believe the tourism industry may contribute to the province's economy in various sectors," he added.

The Jakarta Province government has allocated Rp360 billion (£20.79 million) at its budget to organize the 2020 Formula E race. The budget was approved by the Jakarta Legislative Council on Aug 13 this year.

Apart from the allocated budget, the Jakarta governor proposed an additional Rp934 billion to purchase insurance, along with the city's commitment fee to the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), an association that sanctions Formula E racing events.

Meanwhile, some offices of the provincial government proposed allocating Rp600 million for organizing the Formula E pre event, "The 2019 Jakarta Fun Race".

As of today, the total Rp1.6 trillion had been proposed by the provincial government to the Jakarta Legislative Council to fund the event. The Council has not yet approved all the budget proposals, including for insurance and the race's commitment fee.
