Kendari, SE Sulawesi (ANTARA) - The police investigated six of its personnel allegedly violating the standard operating procedures (SOP), resulting in deaths of two students at a rally against controversial bills in the Southeast Sulawesi provincial capital of Kendari recently.

"They are believed to have violated the SOP while securing the rally," Chief of the Police Profession and Security Division of the Indonesian Police Headquarters Brigadier General Hendro Pandowo remarked in Kendari, the capital of Southeast Sulawesi Province, on Thursday.

The investigating team of the Police Profession and Security Division noted that the six personnel from the Southeast Sulawesi Provincial Police and the Kendari Police Resort had allegedly carried firearms while securing the rally outside the Southeast Sulawesi Provincial Legislative Assembly (DPRD) building on Thursday (Sept 25, 2019).

"The investigation of the personnel allegedly violating SOP while securing the rally was conducted intensively. They will stand trial as soon as possible if their dossiers are complete," he stated.

Chief of the Southeast Sulawesi Provincial Police Brigadier General Merdisyam remarked that the police stand resolute in probing its personnel suspected of shooting the students during the rally.

Two students were killed in a massive student protest in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, last Thursday, to reject several controversial bills, including the Criminal Code Bill.

One of the students, identified as Immawan Randi of the University of Halu Oleo's Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries, died of a gunshot wound last Thursday.

On the following day, Muh. Yusuf Kardawi died after receiving intensive care following his surgery at the Bahtermas Hospital.
