Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - The Yogyakarta city government plans to build a creative industry center in the Terban market that will function as a studio, a consulting service center, and a showroom to display a variety of creative products.

"It will be located at Terban Market in Yogyakarta. The location is quite strategic, while the surrounding area is being done up, including pedestrian walkways on Suroto Street and Sudirman Street," Yogyakarta Vice Mayor, Heroe Poerwadi, said in Yogyakarta on Wednesday.

"The Suroto and Sudirman areas are expected to become a new tourist destination. Surely, the presence of the creative industry center will support the development of tourism in the area," he said.

The plan to build the creative industry center was first put in place two years ago, he said.

The creative industry center will use a five-storey building equipped with three basements to meet parking needs. The building will also have a book store, a co-working space, an exhibition hall, a food court and sports facilities for wall climbing and skateboarding.

"The design of the building is also being adjusted to the atmosphere of the area such as the Kotabaru culture preserve which has an Indian-style building,” he said.

To get funding assistance, Poerwadi presented the plan to build the creative industry center to the director general of the small and medium industry of the Industry Ministry.

"If we rely only on the Yogyakarta city budget, the construction will take a long time. We hope there will be funding assistance from the central government so that the construction can begin soon," he said. Related news: Yogyakarta Airport construction targeted for completion in December
