Samarinda, East Kalimantan (ANTARA) - One in every 17 children in East Kalimantan experienced sexual violence once, while one in three children had endured physical violence once, East Kalimantan’s Demography, Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Office Chief Halda Arsyad stated.

The violence affected not only children in East Kalimantan but also the rest of Indonesia, and serious attention is necessary to fulfill their rights to lead a normal life, Chief of the Demography, Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Office of East Kalimantan Halda Arsyad stated here on Saturday.

According to national data on the life experience of children and youth issued by the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection and the United Nations Children's Fund (UINCEF) in 2018, one out of two children in the age group of 13 to 17 years have once experienced emotional violence.

In the meantime, three out of every five daughters aged between 13 and 17 once experienced emotional violence, one out of every five daughters experienced physical violence and one out of 11 daughters endured sexual violence.

She attributed the high number of children falling prey to violence to the lack of awareness among 76-88 percent of children and youths regarding services to anticipate violence.

The application of the Convention on Children's Rights, through the development of children-friendly districts/cities, is one of the strategies to fulfill children's rights, she added. Related news: Combating sexual violence on college campuses
