The one that matters is how all the victims be returned to Indonesia, safely and smoothly,
Beijing (ANTARA) - The Embassy of Indonesia in Beijing has repatriated some 40 Indonesian women trafficked to several regions in China in 2019.

"As many as 40 women we repatriated had fallen victim to the criminal act of human trafficking," Indonesian Ambassador to China Djauhari Oratmangun remarked in Beijing on Monday, December 6.

The year 2019 bore witness to the most prolific complaints as well as the accommodation of bride trafficking cases and victims in comparison with the previous years.

Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi held several meetings with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi to deliberate on this case.

"The one that matters is how all victims will be returned to Indonesia, safely and smoothly," Oratmangun noted.

Chinese men marry Indonesian women after paying a "broker" some money to the tune of some hundred million rupiah. Wedding processes are conducted in Indonesia, and later, the grooms bring their wives to China.

In China, the wives were mistreated, as they fled to seek support from the embassy in Beijing. Some of them hitchhiked trucks to undertake trips spanning hundreds of kilometers.

The repatriation process encountered some hurdles, as the husbands also filed complaints with the police of their wives going missing.

"From now on, in connection with those specific cases, we will request them to make a choice of either separating or continuing with their marriage," Ichsan Firdaus, the coordinator of protocol and consul of the embassy, revealed.
