Ambon, Maluku (ANTARA) - The Maluku Provincial Legislative Assembly (DPRD) was concerned over the fact that the Ambon class 1 correctional facility in Maluku Province housed almost 30 percent drug-related inmates.

"We learnt the figure after conducting an impromptu inspection of the Ambon class 1 correctional facility along with the Law and Human Rights Office of Maluku Province some time ago," Chief of the DPRD Commission I Amir Rumra noted here on Tuesday.

The drug-related inmates are not only common people and state civil apparatuses but also irresponsible police officers convicted of drug-related crimes, he noted.

The DPRD Commission I has also planned to meet with the National Narcotics Board (BNN) Office in Maluku Province and the Maluku Provincial Police chief. However, owing to his hectic activities, the meeting with the Maluku Provincial Police chief had yet to be realized.

"The DPRD is optimistic that the correctional facility, BNN office, and police would work more seriously to supervise the circulation of drugs. The National Police have taken the right step to sack any of its members involved in drug cases," he affirmed.

The DPRD also lauded the arrest of three officers of the Maluku Provincial Police and two other common people while they were consuming crystal methamphetamine at the Tantui Police Dormitory last week.

Indonesia remains under grave threat from drug dealers, as several individuals from its working-age population have been embroiled in a vicious circle.

According to the National Narcotics Agency's (BNN's) report, some 50 drug use-related deaths occur in a day in Indonesia.

However, their deaths have failed to deter other drug users in the country from consuming these banned substances.
