Development of the creative economy plays a strategic role in contributing to the national economy, foreign exchange earnings, and national identity and values.
London (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government believes that development of the creative economy plays a strategic role in contributing to the national economy, foreign exchange earnings, and national identity and values.

Permanent Delegation of the Republic of Indonesia to UNESCO Prof. Surya Rosa Putra made the remarks during an event held on the sidelines of the 13th Intergovernmental Committee of the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

UNESCO Deputy Director General Ernesto Ottone opened the four-day meeting that ended on Friday, Feb 14. The conference covered discussion on a work plan for the 2020-2021 period, including monitoring policies and activities.

Indonesia, which along with Colombia and the United Arab Emirates, co-hosted the meeting, is viewed as a "leader" at a global level to promote the creative economy and apply the 2005 Convention.

At the meeting, Putra shed light on Indonesia's experience and mainstreaming policy in the development of creative economy at a national level.

Addressing invitees and delegates from the UNESCO member states, Putra pointed to numerous steps taken by Indonesia at an international level to promote this issue and encourage collaboration among nations.

The first initiative was organizing the World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE) in Bali in 2018 and later the Friends of Creative Economy (FCE) Forum in 2019.

The WCCE Forum 2018 managed to adopt the Bali Agenda for Creative Economy encompassing financing and capacity building for development of the creative economy, he stated.
The second initiative is a proposal for the UN Resolution concerning “International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development 2021" that was later adopted on December 19, 2019.

This resolution contains several steps to develop the creative economy in support of sustainable development.
