Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Azerbaijani Embassy in Indonesia held a commemorative ceremony dedicated to the 97th birth anniversary of national leader Heydar Aliyev.

The national leader was born on May 10, 1923, in Nakhchivan, according to a statement from the Azerbaijani Embassy received in Jakarta on Thursday.

The Embassy officials laid a wreath before the national leader’s bust at the Embassy. Thereafter, while conversing with the diplomatic staff, Ambassador Jalal Mirzayev spoke at length on the work of national leader Aliyev for the people of Azerbaijan.

Referring to the 1969-1982 term of his leadership of Azerbaijan, Ambassador Mirzayev recalled that during the 1970s, two thousand young Azerbaijanis were annually sent to different cities of the USSR to study various subjects at higher educational institutions. He also drew attention to the establishment of a military school named after Jamshid Nakhchivanski in Azerbaijan in the face of various obstacles.

Aliyev remain resolute in making Azerbaijani language as the state language in the Constitution of 1978 and envisioned other noble and tireless work for the future independence of Azerbaijan.

The ambassador noted that the first steps of the state independence were taken in Nakhchivan under Aliyev’s leadership. Under the headship of the Great Leader, the words “Soviet” and “Socialist” were excluded from the name of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, the current tricolor national flag was adopted as the state flag in Nakhchivan for the first time, the Day of Solidarity of World Azerbaijanis was established, political assessment was given to the tragedy of Black January, and Soviet troops were withdrawn from the Autonomous Republic.

Ambassador Mirzayev highlighted that when Aliyev had assumed leadership of Azerbaijan in June 1993, he inherited a collapsed country from his predecessors. However, Aliyev returned to Azerbaijan as a national leader, with a rescue mission, and owing to him, Azerbaijan succeeded in escaping the threat of extinction and became a stable developing country.

Within a short period of time, the civil war was prevented, socio-political stability was restored, the national foreign policy was built in accordance with national interests, and a successful oil strategy was launched.

The ambassador also noted that today the independent foreign and internal policy founded by national leader Heydar Aliyev is being successfully pursued by President Ilham Aliyev.

Later during the same day, the Azerbaijani Embassy laid an iftar table for the children of Putra Setia orphanage in Jakarta and distributed food packets to elderly people on account of the holy month of Ramadhan and the celebration of the 97th birth anniversary of the national leader Aliyev.
