Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Environment Diaz Hendropriyono stated that the housing sector can contribute to reducing gas emissions in Indonesia through the use of plastic waste-based building materials.

"Related to emissions, how can this housing sector also produce low-emission housing in the future," he remarked in Jakarta on Friday.

The deputy minister then called on companies, including start-ups, to start utilizing plastic waste in building materials, such as bricks to cement.

In this way, more environment-friendly housing can be realized.

"For example, start-ups in the housing sector can make the bricks," he suggested.

According to Hendropriyono, various parties need to utilize the plastic waste accumulated in Indonesia.

The deputy minister emphasized that apart from the transportation sector, the housing sector should also transform towards zero emission.

Waste utilization is expected to solve the waste problem in Indonesia, he added.

Regarding waste handling, his ministry has sent a letter to 306 regional heads still operating open dumping landfills. They are urged to improve their management to become sanitary landfills or at least controlled landfills.

Indonesia has actively contributed to various environmental events at the international scale. Hence, Hendropriyono remarked that various sectors' role in waste use is expected to support the target of achieving Indonesia's carbon neutrality.

Earlier, President Prabowo Subianto echoed Indonesia's optimism about achieving a net zero carbon target before 2050 as a contribution to reducing global temperatures.

During the APEC CEO Summit Peru 2024 forum, Prabowo articulated Indonesia's ambitious green energy strategy, asserting the nation will attain energy self-sufficiency in the next few years and complete renewable electricity generation within a decade, as reported by Hendropriyono.

At the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Azerbaijan on November 14, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq also highlighted Indonesia's unwavering dedication to meeting its climate goals through mutually beneficial partnerships rather than relying on aid.
