In a statement on Tuesday, Antoni applauded the long-standing and productive cooperative relationship between the two countries, particularly through various Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) projects in the forestry sector.
According to him, the collaboration serves as an important foundation for strengthening sustainable forest management and addressing the challenges of global climate change.
Furthermore, the minister invited the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) to jointly improve the quality of the JICA project, as part of strengthening the World Mangrove Center initiative.
He considered such an initiative could act as a global hub for rehabilitation, research, education, and innovation in mangrove ecosystem management, while also serving as an international benchmark for nature-based climate mitigation and adaptation.
On that occasion, Antoni also invited the Japanese counterpart to engage in Indonesia’s carbon economy, particularly through afforestation and reforestation initiatives, including in national parks.
This aligns with the opportunity to implement the Voluntary Carbon Market following the issuance of Presidential Regulation Number 110 of 2025 concerning the Implementation of the Carbon Economic Value (NEK) and National Greenhouse Gas Emission Control.
In addition, the bilateral meeting also reinforced the strong commitment of both countries to strengthening strategic cooperation in the forestry sector, while also realizing a tangible contribution to global efforts to address climate change through nature-based solutions.
The meeting was part of a series of state visits by President Prabowo Subianto to Japan, started on Monday (March 30).
Meanwhile, Japanese Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries Suzuki Norikazu conveyed that Indonesia is a strategic partner for the Japanese government, particularly in the forestry sector.
He also reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting Indonesia’s tropical forest management initiatives, particularly through projects coordinated by JICA.
As a concrete manifestation of this support, in April 2026, MAFF will assign two experts to support a JICA project related to sustainable mangrove management in Indonesia.
Furthermore, MAFF also seeks support from the Ministry of Forestry in implementing the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) scheme in the forestry sector to mitigate climate change.
