Agrinas is the firm assigned by the government to build and provide essential facilities and equipment for more than 80 thousand village cooperatives in collaboration with the military, as outlined by a 2025 presidential instruction.
"We have already agreed to procure as many as 160 thousand units," Agrinas President Director Joao Angelo de Sousa Mota remarked at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs office in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He explained that the company opted for imported vehicles because factories in Indonesia do not manufacture fourwheel drive pickup trucks.
"All 4x4 cars here are imported. None is manufactured locally," he emphasized.
On that note, Mota highlighted that Indonesia aims to bring in 13,600 pickup trucks manufactured in Japan by Mitsubishi, 10 thousand units by Hino, and 900 by Isuzu, as well as 13 thousand units from China's Foton.
"The remainder will be imported from India," he added, noting that the government has allocated a budget worth Rp200 trillion (approximately US$11.7 billion) for the imports.
However, he did not disclose how many trucks had already arrived in Indonesia.
On Monday (March 30), Cooperatives Minister Ferry Juliantono confirmed that the government had begun distributing pickup trucks to village cooperatives despite not mentioning a specific number.
"There are pickup trucks already distributed to KDMPs. I believe these vehicles are proper and adequate to support cooperative operations," he told the media in Jakarta.
He underlined that the government would continue to gradually distribute operational vehicles to cooperatives that have completed physical construction.
Earlier, Juliantono reported that the government had begun facility development for 34,500 KDMPs, with 2,500 already completed. He said construction for 10,000 cooperatives is projected to be finished by August or September.
