Makassar (ANTARA) - Sulawesi has the highest number of endemic bird species in Indonesia, with 159 species recorded as of January 2026.

“The 2026 report by Burung Indonesia, which presents the latest developments in national bird diversity, shows that Sulawesi has the largest number of endemic species, totaling 159,” said Burung Indonesia communications officer Meliza Laveda in a press statement received on Friday.

The report states that Indonesia is home to 1,834 bird species, of which 538 are endemic and found only in specific regions.

Maluku ranks second with 117 endemic species, followed by Java and Bali with 80 species each.

Papua has 75 endemic species, followed by Nusa Tenggara with 62 species, Sumatra with 54 species, and Kalimantan with six species.

In addition to highlighting biodiversity, the report also underscores growing pressures on bird populations.

A total of 159 bird species in Indonesia are classified as threatened, including 29 critically endangered, 49 endangered, and 81 vulnerable species.

Changes in the conservation status of several species have been influenced by updated scientific data, providing a more accurate picture of population conditions in the wild.

The report also stresses the importance of sustainable conservation efforts, particularly in addressing habitat loss and hunting, which remain major threats to the survival of endemic bird species in Indonesia.
