Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of Indonesia’s People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) Ahmad Muzani emphasized that Indonesia is not taking sides in the conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran.

"As a country that adheres to an independent and active policy, Indonesia cannot possibly take sides in a situation like this," Muzani stated during a meeting with Islamic boarding school leaders and Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Indonesia Faisal Abdullah Al Amoudi in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Muzani said that amid the conflict, it is Indonesia's obligation—with its independent and active policy—to continuously seek peaceful solutions, so diplomacy becomes the way to resolve all differences.

This stance was also emphasized by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in his communication with Arab leaders, including Saudi Arabia.

"The ulama, kiai, and leaders of Islamic boarding schools gathered here also hope that Indonesia will play an active role in peace efforts in the Middle East," Muzani noted.

Creating a culture of peace is part of the constitutional mandate, as stated in the preamble to the 1945 Constitution, he continued.

He believes that Islamic scholars have their own ways of encouraging peace negotiations so peace in the Middle East can be achieved.

Muzani further expressed his appreciation to Saudi Arabia for not being provoked amidst the still volatile situation in the Middle East.

Although the peace talks between the US and Iran in Islamabad have not yet resulted in a peace agreement, Muzani hopes that peaceful efforts and diplomacy will continue to be the way to achieve peace.

"We must believe in the power of diplomacy and negotiations, because they have been able to maintain world peace for decades since World War II," he added.
