We must not take the wrong steps due to a lack of data, but we must also not be late in taking action,Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar has called for the need for clear regulations on the misuse of vape or electronic cigarettes.
He made the statement in response to the rising use of vape, which are increasingly being misused and even becoming a new mode for illegal substance distribution.
“We must not be merely reactive. The government must ensure clear regulations, strong supervision, and massive education for the younger generation,” Iskandar said here on Sunday.
He stressed that the government must not be negligent in addressing the phenomenon. Moreover, he noted that the issue should not be seen merely as a lifestyle trend among young people, but as a real threat to their future.
Iskandar also highlighted that increasingly sophisticated drug trafficking methods require vigilance from all parties, including families, educational institutions, and law enforcement authorities.
He also emphasized the need for a data-driven approach to addressing the issue, in order to avoid causing unnecessary public panic while still ensuring maximum protection for younger generation.
“We must be firm against drugs, but also smart in understanding the phenomenon. We must not take the wrong steps due to a lack of data, but we must also not be late in taking action,” Iskandar said.
He expressed hope that the abuse of vape as a medium for drug distribution can be addressed comprehensively through cross-sector collaboration.
Meanwhile, Head of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) Suyudi Ario Seto, during a meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) on April 7, 2026, proposed regulating vape devices and their liquids under the narcotics and psychotropics bill.
