Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) is encouraging the optimization of domestic drug production capacity as a mitigation to address the impact of Middle East conflict, which may limit exports and increase drug prices.

"BPOM's recommendations and mitigation measures have been implemented, it is technology-based supervision and production capacity optimization," BPOM head Taruna Ikrar said in a meeting with Commission IX of the House of Representatives (DPR) in Jakarta on Monday.

Furthermore, efforts to optimize national drug production are being carried out through coordination with the Health Ministry, particularly regarding generic drugs.

In times of crisis, according to Ikrar, the government is encouraging temporary restrictions on the production of branded generic drugs so industrial capacity can be focused on meeting the public's need for essential medicines.

This measure is part of a strategy to maintain drug availability amidst global pressure, while also reducing potential price spikes due to disruptions in raw material supplies and rising production costs.

In addition to optimizing drug production capacity, BPOM is carrying out an emergency industrial assistance policy, he explained.

This support includes accelerating the transition of active ingredient (API) manufacturers and providing flexibility in the implementation of good manufacturing practice (GMP) to ensure the industry can continue production amidst global pressures.

BPOM is also strengthening hybrid technology-based supervision, including evaluation, certification and inspection, through collaboration with ministries/agencies and the pharmaceutical industry.

The agency is utilizing fast-track import channels through the special access scheme (SAS) mechanism to expedite the drug import process and maintain national availability.

Furthermore, Ikrar explained the government is considering adjusting drug prices, particularly those based on petrochemicals, in line with increasing pressure on global production costs.

These steps are expected to maintain drug availability while reducing potential price increases amidst global turmoil, he concluded.
