After traveling from Yahukimo, Gibran continued his working visit in Sorong, where he was warmly welcomed by local women, widely known as “Mama,” who play a central role in Papua’s grassroots economy.
“This really helps us. I can buy the children’s needs like diapers, sugar and eggs. Thank you, Vice President Gibran,” said Joice Merauga, 46, one of the recipients.
Each beneficiary used the vouchers to purchase daily necessities at a local supermarket, with many expressing appreciation for the direct assistance.
The visit also gave some of the women a chance to interact personally with the vice president, adding a symbolic touch to the aid distribution.

A sign of support
Southwest Papua Social Affairs, Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Office Head Anie Nauw said the activity went beyond ceremony, reflecting tangible government support for women.
She noted that her office had prepared 100 widows to take part in the event and meet directly with Gibran.
“This is an extraordinary opportunity. On Kartini Day, Papuan mothers can meet the vice president and feel real care through simple activities like shopping together,” she said.
Nauw stressed the importance of sustained support for women, particularly in Papua, where economic and social challenges remain significant.
She said strengthening women’s roles is essential to enable them to contribute more actively across development sectors.
“In the future, we want no inequality. Papuan women must continue to be empowered, creative and impactful,” she added.
Gibran’s visit is part of a broader working tour across Papua, including Timika, Sorong and Raja Ampat.
The trip aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to accelerate development and ensure more equitable distribution of welfare in Papua, a region that remains a key national priority.
