Jakarta (ANTARA) - RI Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs ensures that utilizing local food sources for the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program could help stabilising food prices as well as strengthening the national food ecosystem.

Deputy for Coordination of Food Affordability and Security at the ministry, Nani Hendiarti, said here on Monday that measures to maintain food stability are not only related to its supply, but also to strengthen the integrated management.

"The food ingredients (of MBG) come from local sources, which can help to reduce the price. Since the logistic costs are quite high, so it will cut a certain percent if we use from local sources; and, it will also help building the ecosystem," Hendiarti said.

The government, she added, has been preparing specific technical guidelines to ensure that food supply for the MBG program remains secure while prioritizing local sources.

The use of local food sources is a strategy as it can reduce logistics costs, which have significantly contributed to food prices. By utilizing production from nearby areas, food prices can also be reduced considerably.

In addition, this approach is expected to build a stronger and more sustainable food ecosystem.

The supply chain will involve various stakeholders, including farmers and fishermen; micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM); cooperatives, village-owned enterprises (BUMDes), as well as Red and White Village Cooperatives (KDMP).

Furthermore, she stated that the government will encourage more careful planning of raw material needs, especially for horticultural commodities.

Previously, Hendiarti mentioned that the ministry is drafting a regulation related to the supply chain of local food ingredients for the MBG program.

She explained that the regulation aims to implement the mandate of Presidential Regulation (Perpres) Number 115 of 2025 on the MBG program governance.
