Head of the North Lombok Police Criminal Investigation Unit Inspector I Komang Wilandra explained that the suspect was apprehended by airport authorities following police reports of a rape of a fellow South Korean citizen.
“The arrest at Ngurah Rai Airport is the result of coordination between our team and the immigration office, which has issued a travel ban against the suspect,” he said when contacted from Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, on Monday (April 27).
He added that WK was caught on April 21 before being picked up by North Lombok Police the following day.
“The suspect is currently in our custody at the detention house of North Lombok Police for further legal proceedings,” Wilandra remarked.
He pointed out that investigators are examining potential offenses under Indonesia’s laws on sexual violence and the Criminal Code.
Speaking chronologically, the officer noted that the rape incident reportedly occurred at a lodging facility in Gili Trawangan, North Lombok District.
He said the suspect and victim stayed at the same hotel, became acquainted, and spent time together. The incident allegedly took place in the evening after the victim returned to the room, where WK forced sexual intercourse.
Following the incident, he continued, the victim contacted the South Korean Consulate General and later filed a report with North Lombok Police.
“In other words, our investigation is based on the victim’s report. By the time we received it, the suspect had already left Gili Trawangan, prompting us to request a travel ban,” he concluded.
