He floated the idea after reviewing recycled roof tile production at an integrated waste processing site (TPST) in Banyumas District, Central Java, on Tuesday.
“The roof tiles here are quite reliable and affordable. Maybe we can include such products in our housing renovation budgets,” Prabowo remarked following the visit, as observed from the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube broadcast from Jakarta.
He noted that the government had earmarked Rp20 million (around US$1,100) per home for revitalization targeting low-income households, with recycled plastic roof tiles potentially costing only Rp4 million to Rp5 million within that allocation.
The president also underlined the urgency of shifting from zinc roofs to roof tiles on homes nationwide, citing durability and health concerns. He referred to a newly unveiled initiative he called “gentengisasi,” derived from the Indonesian word for clay roof tile, genteng.
“We aim to ditch the use of rust-prone zinc roofs because rusty roofing can cause health issues for inhabitants and tends to look unsightly,” Prabowo stated.
The head of state expressed confidence that integrating waste processing and housing renovation through roofs made from recycled waste would help Indonesia tackle social and environmental issues simultaneously.
Earlier, Prabowo visited the TPST in Wlahar Wetan Village, reviewing its capacity to process up to 75 tonnes of waste daily using automated sorting technology.
Among the facility’s key outputs are eco-friendly roof tiles, which have been tested and used in public facilities across Banyumas.
He hoped the use of such technology could provide practical solutions to Indonesia’s waste and environmental challenges, with the ultimate goal of improving quality of life and public health nationwide.
