The step takes into account public economic conditions and rising global energy prices triggered by the Middle East conflict.
"It's not always easy to address global dynamics like this. Even so, we hope there will be improvements in the situation, and it (airfare) won't burden the public too much," he said in Jakarta on Sunday.
According to him, global geopolitical tensions still impact various economic sectors—including Indonesia's transportation and aviation industries—by driving up global energy prices and subsequently raising operational costs.
He explained that the government understands public concerns regarding potential airfare hikes ahead of the school holidays and the Eid al-Adha celebrations, during which a surge in domestic travel typically occurs.
As the coordinating minister overseeing the Ministry of Transportation, AHY noted that adjusting airfare is challenging as the government must weigh the sustainability of the aviation industry against the broader purchasing power of Indonesians.
He affirmed that discussions are ongoing with the Ministry of Transportation to evaluate various options that could keep airfare adjustments within a reasonable and measured limit.
The government, he added, also continues to monitor global developments while ensuring that national aviation policies take into account public interests and the sustainability of Indonesia's aviation industry.
The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation has adjusted the aviation fuel surcharge to respond to fluctuations in fuel prices and to balance airline operational costs with airfare affordability.
"The fuel surcharge adjustment is based on mechanisms and formulas established by regulation," the ministry's Director General of Civil Aviation, Lukman F. Laisa, said in a statement in Jakarta on Saturday (May 16).
The government has issued the Ministry of Transportation Decree No. KM 1041 of 2026, which states that the fuel surcharge amount is determined based on average fuel prices set by aviation fuel providers.
"The maximum surcharge ranges from 10 percent to 100 percent of the upper limit fare, depending on current aviation fuel price fluctuations," he said.
