Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Culture Ministry said properly managed cultural heritage sites could help spur local economic activity through tourism, small businesses and creative industries linked to culture-based development.

Culture Minister Fadli Zon said on Tuesday that heritage sites should remain active assets instead of becoming neglected historical locations.

“With proper use, these sites can support cultural tourism, including religious tourism, and become part of the cultural economy,” Zon said.

He cited Borobudur Temple as an example of successful revitalization after major restoration and area restructuring between 1973 and 1983.

According to Zon, the reorganization increased tourist arrivals and supported surrounding businesses, similar to developments around Prambanan Temple.

He said heritage areas could also host activities such as sports tourism events, music festivals and other cultural programs depending on the characteristics of each site.

For religious heritage sites, improved maintenance and facilities could help attract visitors while supporting nearby cafes, restaurants and merchandise sellers, he added.

Zon also highlighted the economic potential surrounding the tombs of the Wali Songo, which already draw religious visitors and create demand for local food and services.

In addition, he encouraged micro, small and medium enterprises to incorporate Indonesia’s intangible cultural heritage branding into their products to increase commercial value.

According to Zon, cultural storytelling can strengthen product appeal and allow businesses to market goods at higher prices.

“There is a story behind it, and stories themselves have economic value,” he said.
