Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) - Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu'ti emphasized the importance of strengthening literacy on the dangers of online gambling in schools, following findings that nearly 200 thousand children have been exposed to such activities.

"Yes, we have signed a joint agreement with six ministries, including with the National Police Chief, regarding the use of digital technology, as well as restricting social media use for those under 16 years old," Mu'ti stated here on Wednesday.

He explained that the government has been strengthening anticipatory steps through cross-ministerial and institutional cooperation to control the use of digital technology among children. One of the steps taken is restricting social media use for children under the age of 16.

In addition, the Ministry will also incorporate educational materials on healthy and safe digital media usage into the school orientation period (MPLS) activities.

"At our ministry, through the MPLS program, one of the materials will be counseling on the dangers of online gambling for school children. This is because some of those exposed are simply unaware. So, they might be playing games and then wander into online gambling," he remarked.

According to him, some children are exposed to online gambling due to a lack of understanding regarding the risks of using digital spaces.

Children who play online games can easily be redirected to online gambling sites through various digital links and advertisements.

Therefore, the ministry continues to strengthen ongoing education and counseling through a four-educational-ecosystem approach involving schools, families, communities, and the media.

"This is crucial so that our children are not exposed to online gambling, which has now become a very serious problem," he added.
