According to a ministry statement confirmed on Wednesday, the discussion took place during a meeting between Zon and Weiglein at the Culture Ministry’s office in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The minister said the ministry’s Museum and Cultural Heritage Board of Trustees would be involved in the museum transfer process.
He also called for deeper consultations with relevant parties to gather input on transferring the museum and Weiglein’s collection of more than 1,700 objects.
Culture Ministry Secretary-General Bambang Wibawarta said the Finance Ministry’s Directorate General of State Assets requires additional documents and data to process the museum grant.
The required data include building dimensions and official property documents to support an assessment of the museum and collection value before the transfer to Indonesia.
German entrepreneur, anthropologist and researcher Werner Weiglein has collected cultural objects since the 1970s.
In the 1980s, he began traveling to parts of Indonesia, including Sulawesi and Papua, expanding his ethnographic collection.
The Papua Museum founded and managed by Weiglein in Germany is considered important in introducing Papuan ethnographic heritage to international audiences.
The minister praised Weiglein’s efforts to digitize his private collection before handing it over to Indonesia’s Culture Ministry.
The ministry reiterated its commitment to strengthening Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy through the preservation, documentation and promotion of the nation’s cultural heritage.
