Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry is ramping up firefighting operations to tackle forest and land fires across four Sumatran provinces: Aceh, Riau, Jambi, and South Sumatra.

Head of the ministry's Sumatra Forest Fire Control Agency, Ferdian Krisnanto, said in a statement confirmed on Wednesday that rapid response measures are underway to suppress the fires in those regions.

"Our focus is to respond quickly to every hotspot report, contain the spread of the fires, and ensure thorough cooling operations. In peatland areas, embers can smolder beneath the surface even after the fire has been extinguished," he said.

Therefore, he affirmed that each deployed team continues to conduct double-checks, cooling operations, preventative patrols, and hotspot monitoring for early detection and rapid response.

The ministry's Manggala Agni fire brigade have also been mobilized to ensure field personnel receive adequate support and new fire locations can be addressed immediately.

According to him, quick response has been targeted at Aceh's Nagan Raya District, particularly in Kayee Unou Village and Babah Lueng Village. Suppression efforts are being carried out with extra caution, as the fires are located in peatland areas with highly flammable vegetation.

Firefighting operations in Riau have also been reinforced as focus areas expanded to four locations: Pecing Bekulo Village, Rantau Bais Village, Sokoi Village, and Rupat Island—a new fire location in the region.

To speed up firefighting and cooling operations, the Sumatra Forest Fire Control Agency has deployed Manggala Agni support personnel from the Pekanbaru, Jambi, and Muara Tebo operational regions to Rupat Island.

Manggala Agni is also tackling fires in Jambi and South Sumatra. On Tuesday (June 2), the Muara Bulian Manggala Agni unit, alongside the National Police (Polri) and local residents, successfully extinguished a fire in Durian Luncuk Village, Batanghari District, Jambi.

On the same day, the Banyuasin Manggala Agni Unit, in collaboration with the Ogan Ilir Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) as well as military and police personnel, extinguished a fire in Sungai Rambutan Village, Ogan Ilir District, South Sumatra, with an aerial firefighting operation.
