Indonesia collected 15 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals, finishing joint-first in the medal standings alongside Ukraine, which recorded an identical medal tally.
Coordinator of the Indonesian para-athletics coaching team, Purwo Adi Sanyoto, said in a statement received on Tuesday that the results in Tunisia represent an important step in Indonesia’s effort to qualify for the 2026 Asian Para Games in Nagoya, Japan.
He said competition among participating countries, particularly those from Asia, was extremely intense as athletes sought valuable qualification points.
Host nation Tunisia finished third with 10 gold, six silver, and nine bronze medals, followed by Uzbekistan with eight gold, 11 silver, and 10 bronze medals, and Russia with seven gold, seven silver, and five bronze medals.
Saptoyogo Purnomo was among Indonesia’s leading gold medal contributors, winning three gold medals in the men’s 100-meter T37, men’s 200-meter T37/T38, and the 4x100-meter universal relay events.
Nanda Mei Sholihah matched the achievement by securing three gold medals in the women’s 100-meter T46/T47, women’s 200-meter T46/T47, and the 4x100-meter universal relay.
Meanwhile, Karisma Evi Tiarani added two gold medals after winning the women’s 100-meter T36/42/44 event and the women’s long jump T42/T44/T46/T47 competition.
Purwo said points earned at official World Para Athletics events are crucial for qualification to the 2026 Asian Para Games, which are scheduled to take place from October 18–24.
However, he emphasized that no Indonesian athlete has officially secured qualification yet, as the qualification point calculation period will remain open until July 31, 2026.
Indonesian athlete Alfin Nomleni, who won gold in the men’s 400-meter T20 event, expressed pride in his achievement and said the weather conditions in Tunisia helped him deliver his best performance.
Despite winning gold with a time of 48.82 seconds, Alfin said he remains determined to improve his performance in order to secure a place at the 2026 Asian Para Games and pursue his dream of competing at the Paralympic Games.
Following the Tunisia competition, the Indonesian team is scheduled to attend a centralized training camp in Surakarta before traveling to Mexico in late July for another international championship, which will serve as the final opportunity to collect qualification points for the 2026 Asian Para Games.
