Speaking in Jakarta, Tito called on regional administrations to coordinate with disaster management agencies, agriculture offices and water resources authorities to strengthen mitigation efforts at provincial, district and city levels.
He said El Nino could trigger forest and land fires while reducing water supplies in several parts of the country.
Tito said the government has compiled data from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), and relevant ministries to guide local mitigation planning.
He urged governors to coordinate with district heads and mayors through meetings or virtual discussions to ensure all regions are prepared based on government forecasts and risk assessments.
Regional leaders should also strengthen coordination with the National Police, river basin authorities, agricultural extension officers and fire agencies to reduce drought risks and prevent forest and land fires.
Tito said the central government has prepared a series of mitigation measures, including irrigation improvement and water pumping programs led by the Agriculture Ministry.
"The BNPB will also conduct weather modification operations to induce rainfall in areas that need it," he said.
He also urged village administrations to intensify preventive measures against forest and land fires and ensure any emerging hotspots are quickly brought under control.
