Those seeking to renounce their Indonesian citizenship generally have adequate financial means.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas on Tuesday urged the public not to be concerned about higher fees for renouncing Indonesian citizenship and applying for naturalization, saying the adjustment would have little impact on the general public.

The revised fees, which will take effect on Aug. 1, mark the first adjustment in nearly a decade and are intended to support the Law Ministry's digital transformation, Agtas told reporters at the House of Representatives complex in Jakarta.

“First, this government regulation has remained unchanged for almost 10 years. Second, the Indonesian people do not need to worry about this increase in non-tax state revenue fees,” he said.

Under the new tariff, the fee for foreign nationals applying for Indonesian citizenship will increase from Rp50 million (about US$2,800) to Rp75 million (US$4,200), while the fee for renouncing Indonesian citizenship will rise from Rp1 million (US$ 55.9) to Rp5 million (US$279.5).

Agtas said the adjustment is necessary to support the Law Ministry's transition to a fully digital public service system.

“The Law Ministry is now transforming into a fully digital institution. This system must be maintained. We provide 530 public services, and they all require sustainable support. This should not be seen as a sudden decision,” he said.

He said the fee increase would have little effect on the broader public because applicants for naturalization or citizenship renunciation generally come from a relatively small group with sufficient financial means.

“Those seeking to renounce their Indonesian citizenship generally have adequate financial means. We are not talking about who can or cannot afford it, but the impact on lower-income communities is almost nonexistent,” he said.

Agtas also stressed that foreign nationals seeking Indonesian citizenship must meet strict eligibility requirements, including residing in Indonesia for at least five consecutive years or 10 non-consecutive years.

Meanwhile, applications to renounce Indonesian citizenship are subject to verification by up to 15 ministries and government agencies, and not all applications are approved.

“We must ensure that applicants have no outstanding tax obligations and are not involved in ongoing criminal cases. This must be verified by 14 to 15 ministries and agencies,” he added.
