Several ministers and agency heads arrived at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta by 2:30 p.m., including BMKG Head Teuku Faisal Fathani, BRIN Head Arif Satria and Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni.
Antoni said the meeting would discuss measures to address drought-related risks, including wildfires and other impacts from the recurring global climate phenomenon El Nino.
“El Nino follows a four-year cycle. Since it occurred in 2015, 2019 and 2023, we can expect it in 2027. However, BMKG forecasts it could arrive earlier,” he said.
BRIN Head Arif Satria said the agency had been asked to prepare technologies to help strengthen water security in regions across Indonesia.
He stressed the need to secure adequate water supplies for agriculture and daily needs as Indonesia prepares for potential El Nino conditions.
Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono also highlighted the need to mitigate drought and wildfires.
“We are coordinating with BMKG on weather modification operations to maintain water levels in reservoirs, including lakes,” he told reporters.
The meeting also included Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman, Basarnas Chief Air Marshal Mohammad Syafii and Deputy Home Affairs Minister Bima Arya Sugiarto.
