“Media play a crucial role in building a new era, understanding and hopes for future Indonesia-China relations,” Benny said Tuesday.
He spoke after Peking University academics, led by Professor Wang Weijia of the university’s Institute of Area Studies and Institute of International Communication, visited ANTARA Heritage Center in Jakarta.
Benny said potential cooperation discussed during the meeting included education exchanges.
“Why education? Because we both have journalism schools. We want to strengthen them through cooperation in education and research,” he said.
Journal exchanges were also discussed to strengthen communication amid the rapid development of artificial intelligence, which presents new challenges.
The two sides also discussed cooperation between media organizations to strengthen their role in promoting people-to-people ties between Indonesia and China.
“Increasing cooperation between media organizations, especially news agencies, is clearly beneficial. It not only builds institutional ties but also fosters people-to-people relations,” Benny said.
He also expressed hope that Peking University could cooperate on journalism and strategic communication curricula, educational programs, teaching materials and modules.
Wang Weijia said there was considerable potential for cooperation between ANTARA and Peking University, and offered educational programs for a new generation of journalists.
“Peking University has a long-established program for training Chinese journalists. We have a strong journalism tradition, so we can expand cooperation,” he said.
Wang said such cooperation could help new-generation journalists promote each country’s image and further strengthen people-to-people ties.
“We can see a bright future for people in both countries to work together and build closer relations,” he said.
Peking University is one of China’s most prestigious comprehensive universities. In the QS World University Rankings 2026, it ranks 14th globally, second in Asia and first in China.
The Institute of Area Studies is one of four key interdisciplinary platforms under Peking University’s “Double First-Class” initiative.
Its core mission is to serve national strategies through academic research and professional talent development in country and regional studies.
The Institute of International Communication is one of China’s leading research institutions in its field.
Its main research areas include international communication strategies, national image-building, public diplomacy, internet governance and media industry policy.
