Researcher at the BRIN Electrical Technology Research Center Abdul Wachid Syamroni argued that developing a VPP is especially important for Nusantara because its NZE target precedes the national deadline of 2060.
Speaking during a discussion in Jakarta on Wednesday, he explained that a VPP functions as a system that aggregates clean energy generated and distributed across clusters in IKN.
“Akin to a broomstick, the VPP system runs on a scheme for aggregating small- and medium-sized sticks into a single unit,” Syamroni said, adding that the aggregated energy can be dispatched when needed, enabling the city to reduce its reliance on centralized power generation.
The researcher noted that Nusantara, like other regions across Kalimantan, still relies on a grid sustained by fossil-based conventional power plants.
On that note, he emphasized that developing a VPP would enable the future seat of government to manage its power supply more effectively through an integrated system allowing buildings and facilities equipped with clean energy generators, such as solar panels, to share and redistribute power.
“Energy can be shared within IKN when a cluster has an excess of clean energy, while another is facing a deficiency,” he stated.
Citing the results of dynamic modeling conducted by BRIN, he underscored that operating a VPP system could help Nusantara cut its dependence on fossil energy by up to 55 percent.
Beyond cutting carbon emissions, he continued, VPPs would also create a new electricity business model, in which system operators facilitate power trading among end users rather than merely supplying energy from upstream plants.
