"Let us welcome the month of Indonesian independence with a national remembrance and prayer event with Habib Syech bin Abdul Qodir Assegaf and interfaith figures at the National Monument square," Minister Nasaruddin Umar stated in his written remarks on Wednesday.
The interfaith prayer will be led by representatives of each recognized religious faith in Indonesia, namely Islam, Catholicism, Protestantism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism, he noted.
It will take place alongside a large-scale Islamic dhikr (remembrance) gathering and prayer procession, which will feature Quran recitation, a collective completion of the Quran, salawat (veneration of the Prophet Muhammad), and Islamic music and choir performances. A congregational Maghrib prayer will also be held during the event.
Meanwhile, Religious Affairs Ministry Secretary General Kamaruddin Amir described prayer as a "spiritual power that accompanies every endeavor of our nation."
"Hence, through the interfaith prayer, we appeal to the Almighty God to help Indonesia realize its aspiration as a sovereign, just, and prosperous nation," Amir said.
Participants are invited to come in white attire and bring simple prayer equipment. They are discouraged from bringing children and infants and prohibited from bringing dangerous goods.
As the activity takes place from 5 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Jakarta time, participants can enter the venue from 3 p.m., with entry checkpoints provided at the northern and southern gates of the National Monument.
"We also provide hundreds of toilet cubicles and ablution areas with 1,000–1,500 faucets for the convenience of the participants," he added.
The ministry expressed hope that the national prayer will be a moment of solidarity among all national elements as they usher in the month of independence.
The activity is also expected to strengthen interfaith relations and solidarity, united in common goals for a sovereign, just, and prosperous Indonesia, he remarked.
