Addressing members of the Industrial Estate Association (HKI) in Jakarta on Thursday, Jumhur said industrial estates should not be synonymous with barren landscapes.
According to the minister, industrial development can go hand in hand with efforts to preserve environmental quality.
"Whenever I visit an industrial estate, I often wonder why it looks so barren. In fact, industrial estates can be lush and beautiful while still accommodating factories," he said.
The Ministry of Environment, says Jumhur, will launch a program to plant two billion trees.
He expressed hope that industrial estate operators would support the initiative by expanding green spaces and planting more trees within their industrial areas.
According to him, industrial estates with adequate green spaces and tree cover can help absorb carbon emissions.
Such efforts, he added, could also create economic value through carbon trading mechanisms.
He further said that development centered on environmental conservation could generate new economic opportunities while supporting industrial growth.
Jumhur emphasized that the country's development paradigm should shift from a conventional approach that prioritizes economic growth at the expense of the environment to one that integrates environmental protection into value creation.
He further stressed that environmental protection should not be viewed as an obstacle to investment or industrial activities.
As long as businesses commit to meeting environmental standards from the outset, Jumhur said the development of industrial estates can proceed more smoothly.
"It is not true that environmental requirements hinder development. What needs to change is our mindset as Indonesians. Everyone should commit from the very beginning to protecting and restoring the Earth. If we do that, everything will proceed smoothly," he said.
He stressed that economic growth and development must be achieved through environmental protection as a new paradigm.
