Mimika Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Alredo Agustinus Rumbiak said residents reported the alleged abduction to officers at the Jila police station.
Speaking in Timika on Wednesday, Alredo said police had yet to obtain direct testimony from residents who witnessed the alleged abduction.
“According to my officers at the Jila police station, residents reported it,” he said.
Alredo said police also had no information identifying the alleged victims or witnesses who directly saw the incident.
“So far, no one has provided the names of the alleged hostages or testified to seeing the incident. We are still investigating residents’ accounts,” he said.
Initial information indicated the alleged abduction occurred in Jila Subdistrict on Tuesday, Aug. 18, and involved nine female civilians.
The nine women were allegedly abducted by an armed group. Police are still verifying the report, including the identities and whereabouts of those reportedly abducted.
Jila is one of 18 subdistricts in Mimika District. The mountainous area is accessible partly by small aircraft.
