Tangerang (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Health has deployed orthopedic specialists from several regions to treat people injured in a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province last week.

Deputy Minister of Health Benjamin Paulus Octavianus said in Tangerang on Thursday that the ministry sent orthopedic doctors from Makassar in South Sulawesi and Surabaya in East Java to eight districts affected by the quake.

He said the deployment of orthopedic specialists was aimed at treating injured victims, most of whom suffered broken bones or fractures after being trapped under building debris.

“Orthopedic specialists from Makassar and Surabaya have arrived. Yesterday, we sent doctors to eight districts and distributed them across the affected areas. They are now providing treatment, and a large number of surgical procedures have already been performed,” he said.

Medical teams and doctors have been deployed across the eight districts to treat victims, most of whom were injured by falling building materials during the earthquake, he said.

“The doctors have been distributed across eight districts to provide healthcare services to the victims. A number of surgical procedures have also been carried out,” he said.

The health ministry also said medicine supplies in the affected areas remained sufficient for about five days. Additional supplies could be sent from other regions if stocks ran low.

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Nagekeo district in East Nusa Tenggara on August 15, triggering landslides, damaging buildings and disrupting access to some areas.

According to preliminary data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) as of Wednesday, 71 people had died as a result of the disaster. Meanwhile, the number of residents displaced across several areas of NTT had reached 59,647, with the highest number of evacuees recorded in Manggarai District.
