Manggarai, NTT (ANTARA) - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka emphasized youth participation in relief measures in quake-hit regions of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) as he brought six University of Indonesia psychology students to assist with psychosocial services for survivors.

“I appreciate you students for showing care and dedication to helping the recovery of our brothers and sisters in NTT,” he remarked during a visit to an evacuation center in Manggarai District, NTT, on Friday.

Gibran facilitated the six students’ travel to NTT, giving them an opportunity to put their studies into practice by providing psychological support to local residents.

“These students will stay here for a week to help provide psychological support for our fellow citizens, especially children,” he said.

The vice president tasked the aspiring psychologists with creating a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable environment for displaced children through games, storytelling, singing, and other psychosocial activities.

He expected the students to help children express their feelings and share their experiences without dwelling on the disaster, while also conducting observations to determine whether further psychosocial treatment is needed.

“I hope the knowledge you have gained on campus will deliver tangible benefits for communities in NTT,” he told the students.

Gibran also called on more young people to contribute to ongoing disaster response in collaboration with central and regional institutions, urging them to apply their expertise and skills to assist those in need.

The vice president arrived in NTT alongside the six students on Thursday (Aug. 20) for an official visit to observe on-the-ground conditions and meet residents affected by the deadly magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck regions across Flores Island on Aug. 15.

He began the agenda by visiting communities in Sikka District before continuing to East Manggarai and Manggarai districts on the second day.
