Berton SP Panjaitan, acting head of BNPB's Data, Information and Disaster Communication Center, said crews were using ground-based water spraying to contain the fire.
"The fire was brought under control but reignited and spread. The fire is in Tellumpanua Village, Tanete Rilau Subdistrict, near Barru 3 State Senior High School," he said.
BNPB's Operations Control Directorate said a rapid assessment and witness accounts indicated the roughly three-hectare fire had first been detected two days earlier.
As of Thursday (August 27), a joint team comprising the regional disaster agency, military, police and other agencies was still fighting the fire, with access and weather posing challenges.
There were no further reports on the fire's impact on school activities, but Panjaitan said it underscored the need for greater vigilance around residential areas and public facilities.
"Local governments need to anticipate drought impacts on water and food supplies by monitoring water sources, farmland and vulnerable communities, especially those in remote mountainous areas," Panjaitan said.
