"Most importantly, we must develop habits, infrastructure, and a waste management system with a positive impact on the environment," the Head of the Communication Department of the Kura Kura Bali SEZ, Zefri Alfaruqy, noted in Bali on Thursday.
He explained that the organic waste processing facility development has been on trial since September 2025 and is now being implemented through the operation of the Organic Waste Composting Center (ICC).
According to Zefri, the ICC has processed 9.8 tons of organic waste in the area for the June-August 2026 period. The waste was sourced from office waste and landscape maintenance, including leaves, twigs, grass, and food scraps, into compost and will be used to fertilize green areas throughout the SEZ.
In composting methods, the facility uses two options, namely open window composting, which processes large volumes of organic waste, as the natural heat generated during the decomposition process effectively kills pathogenic bacteria and weed seeds.
The second method, ring compost, is applied to more limited land areas, relying on air circulation to prevent unpleasant odors and maintain the aesthetics and tidiness of the operational area.
Zefri said that during the trial period from September 22-October 6, 2025, some 3.4 kilograms of food waste was processed using anaerobic biodigester technology, producing 1.3 kilograms of compost.
A biodigester is an electronic device to decompose organic materials such as food waste, animal waste, and agricultural waste by microorganisms without oxygen, or anaerobically.
The organic waste processing process also involved residents of the surrounding area in Serangan Village, Denpasar.
"The program supports the government's efforts to reduce waste burdens on the environment," a local villager acting as an ICC manager, Wayan Sudibya, said.
