Director General of Air Transportation Lukman F. Laisa told ANTARA here Sunday that the policy applies to passengers whose flights were canceled because volcanic ash affected airport operations.
Laisa said the ministry considers the full refund a public service measure to ensure passengers do not suffer financial losses from safety-related cancellations.
Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi had earlier urged airlines to promptly notify passengers about cancellations caused by closures at airports affected by Anak Krakatau’s volcanic ash.
The measure is intended to prevent passengers from traveling unnecessarily to airports when their flights have been canceled because of unsafe operating conditions.
Airlines can notify affected passengers electronically through registered personal contacts, including email addresses and telephone numbers, Dudy said.
Passengers can also process cancellations and refunds electronically by providing their registered contact details to airlines, allowing the process to be handled remotely.
Refunds are expected to be processed electronically alongside cancellation notifications to speed assistance for affected passengers.
The Transportation Ministry has instructed airlines to protect passengers’ rights by providing clear information about schedule changes, cancellations and refund procedures.
Six airports were temporarily closed after volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau affected flight safety, according to the Transportation Ministry.
The ministry initially closed five airports: Radin Inten II in Lampung, Soekarno-Hatta in Tangerang, Halim Perdanakusuma in Jakarta, Pondok Cabe in South Tangerang and Budiarto in Curug, Tangerang.
After additional testing at noon local time, Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung was also found affected by volcanic ash, prompting its temporary closure.
