Jakarta (ANTARA) - Trade Minister Budi Santoso urged Indonesian pet food manufacturers to enhance product competitiveness and added value to capture a larger share of the domestic market and expand global export footprints.

In a statement on Sunday, Minister Budi highlighted the vital role of local producers in ensuring domestic pet food products become the primary preference for consumers amidst strong competition from imported goods.

"The domestic market for pet food is very large, and we encourage local producers to enter this market more optimally. The Trade Ministry encourages this industry to continue to develop so that our economy can also grow," Budi stated.

The minister noted that strengthening domestic production capacity and product quality serves as a prerequisite for opening wider export opportunities.

According to him, international market access for Indonesian pet food is increasingly favorable due to numerous preferential trade agreements—including the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (I-EU CEPA)—which is scheduled for signing this year.

"Indonesia already has many trade agreements with various countries, including the one with the European Union. With these trade agreements, market opportunities for Indonesian products are increasingly open,” Budi explained.

The push comes as Indonesia’s pet food export segment displays strong momentum, achieving a compound growth rate of 31.98 percent from 2021 to 2025.

By 2025, Indonesia's total export value in this sector reached US$8.66 million.

India was the main destination for Indonesian pet food exports in 2025, accounting for a 53.60 percent market share, followed by Malaysia (18.50 percent), Japan (8.96 percent), the Philippines (7.88 percent), and Hong Kong (4.77 percent).

Meanwhile, pet food exports during the first half of 2026 (January–June) reached US$3.43 million.

Despite recent gains, Indonesia currently ranks 59th among global pet food suppliers, holding a 0.03 percent share of the international market.

Germany currently leads global pet food exports with a 12.18 percent market share, followed by Thailand (10.24 percent), Poland (9.46 percent), the United States (8.68 percent), and France (8.63 percent).
