Makassar (ANTARA) - Australian biotechnology company Uluu is partnering with seaweed farmers and local partners in South Sulawesi to develop a traceable and certified Indonesian seaweed supply chain to meet growing demand in global markets.

The effort comes as Uluu expands its operations in Indonesia through the establishment of PT Uluu Solusi Indonesia, which will develop seaweed-based materials as an alternative to fossil-based plastics, the company said on Saturday.

“Indonesia, as the world’s second-largest seaweed producer, has a critical role to play in Uluu’s mission to replace fossil-based plastics with materials made from seaweed,” President Director of PT Uluu Solusi Indonesia Dian Kurniawati said in a statement in Makassar.

Kurniawati said Uluu’s presence in Indonesia would strengthen cooperation with farmers, suppliers, and local partners, while ensuring that cultivation practices are responsible and traceable from upstream to downstream.

The company has completed its first shipment of fully traceable seaweed from CV Persada Semesta in South Sulawesi. The traceability system, developed with supply-chain technology company Koltiva, digitally records the origin and movement of seaweed from farm level through processing and shipment.

“Traceability helps us understand and improve every stage of the supply chain, from the farmers through to the final shipment,” said Indra Santoso, general manager of CV Persada Semesta.

Uluu and its partners have also launched an Aquaculture Improvement Program (AIP) in Luwu, South Sulawesi, through Seafood Savers, an initiative of WWF-Indonesia.

The program aims to improve farming practices and management systems in line with the ASC-MSC Seaweed Standard and help suppliers move toward certification.

Uluu is targeting the development of Indonesia’s first ASC-MSC-certified seaweed supply chain, enabling the company to source independently certified and traceable raw materials to support the development of seaweed-based materials.
