Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is preparing three alternative airports for domestic and international flights while six airports remain closed because volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau has disrupted aviation operations.

Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said Kertajati Airport in Majalengka, Ahmad Yani Airport in Semarang and Juanda Airport in Surabaya had been prepared as alternative landing sites.

The measure aims to maintain air travel services, particularly for passengers traveling to Jakarta, through airports considered safe for operations, Dudy said here Sunday.

The government has prepared airports in Java as alternative landing sites for domestic flights from outside Java and international flights, he said.

The Transportation Ministry has authorized airlines to divert flights to the three airports, subject to operational and safety conditions.

Dudy said the alternative airports were part of efforts to maintain air connectivity while prioritizing safety during closures linked to the Anak Krakatau eruption.

Six airports were temporarily closed after volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau affected flight safety, according to the Transportation Ministry.

The ministry initially closed five airports: Radin Inten II in Lampung, Soekarno-Hatta in Tangerang, Halim Perdanakusuma in Jakarta, Pondok Cabe and Budiarto in Tangerang.

After further testing at noon Sunday, Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung was also found affected by volcanic ash, prompting a temporary suspension of flights.

The ministry has guaranteed full refunds for passengers whose flights were canceled because volcanic ash affected airport operations.

Director General of Air Transportation Lukman F. Laisa said the refund policy applies to passengers whose flights were canceled because of the airport closures.

Laisa said the full-refund policy is a public service measure intended to ensure passengers do not suffer financial losses from safety-related cancellations.
