She said such practices should not occur and must be investigated promptly, noting that President Prabowo Subianto had also raised concerns about the issue.
“We will ask relevant authorities to investigate land affected by fires that was subsequently converted for other uses,” Puan said after a plenary session in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The House already has a team specifically tasked with overseeing the government’s response to forest fires and other disasters, she said.
Puan said addressing forest and land fires should go beyond fighting the fires themselves.
Authorities must also address their effects on people’s lives, including social conditions, education, health, and welfare, she said.
“There are already respiratory problems, while children’s education has been disrupted. These issues must be addressed immediately, with solutions also needed for the future,” Puan said.
National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo previously said police had named 138 suspects in forest and land fire cases, including 119 accused of deliberate burning and 19 of negligence.
“Police have received 200 reports and named 138 suspects for deliberate burning and negligence, including 119 for deliberate acts and 19 for negligence,” Listyo said Monday.
The number of suspects could rise as police investigate reports and findings of forest and land fires in several regions, he said.
Police are also handling cases involving eight companies, which are currently undergoing legal proceedings, Listyo said.
