Potential joint initiatives aimed at strengthening food security were among the topics discussed by Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and his Sudanese counterpart, Lt. General Hassan Daoud Kabroun Kayan.
Speaking after the meeting, ministry spokesperson Brig. General Rico Ricardo Sirait noted that Sudan highlighted its vast agricultural area and sizeable livestock sector.
He added that the African country underscored opportunities to harness and align those strengths with Indonesia’s large-scale food security agenda.
“Indonesia certainly sees this as an opportunity worthy of following up,” Sirait said, adding that the Agriculture Ministry may be involved to forge mutually beneficial cooperation in the field.
Apart from food security, the two sides exchanged views on enhancing human resource quality through education and training programs, military personnel and cadet exchanges, and fostering partnerships between defense educational institutions.
Sudan voiced interest in sending more of its troops to Indonesia for capacity-building programs, he added.
He further remarked that the discussion extended to economic affairs and broader areas of cooperation, with Sudan emphasizing that it is well-positioned to help Indonesia step up its ties with African nations.
The official stated that relevant ministries and agencies would study all the cooperation opportunities floated during the meeting.
"Sudan also proposed cooperation in the field of defense, to which Indonesia responded positively," he added, confirming that the two countries had begun drafting a document supporting potential defense cooperation.
He highlighted that Indonesia also used the meeting to reiterate its concern for the safety and welfare of the Sudanese people amid a prolonged civil war. Indonesia has contributed humanitarian aid to Sudan.
