Gorontalo, Gorontalo (ANTARA News) - A tectonic earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter Scale hit Gorontalo at 04.36 p.m. local time on Monday.

According to the local Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency , the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 0.97 degrees Northern Latitude and 123.32 degrees Eastern Longitude, 39 kilometers northeast of Gorontalo at a depth of 10 kilometers below sea level.

However, the earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
Nonetheless, Goronatlo residents went into a panic when the temblor occurred

"The temblor lasted only a few seconds but it was distinctly felt and frightened us," Yudin, a Gorontalo resident, said.

After 10 minutes, however, there were no more aftershocks.

Gorontalo was also hit by a 7.7 temblor in November 2008.
