Bitung, N Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - Head of the Bitung in industrial and trade agency Adri Mewengkeng said here Wednesday that Bitung may become the only special economic zone (KEK) in North Sulawesi.

He said the Industry Ministry has it was about time to make an analysis on environmental impact (Amdal) of Bitung.

"The detailed engineering as one form of a division of types of industries so that small industries already have the locations prepared, as well as those of the big industries.

"With the plans, each investor will be directed to the set locations, of course with the facilities of the local administrations," he said.

The area of the regions that had been prepared as KEKs, Sakul said, is five hectares, located in Tanjung Merah, Manembonembo, Bitung, North Sulawesi.

Sakul also said that the master plan for the KEK had already been prepared and he therefore believed that Bitung has a big chance to become a special economic zone.

"With Bitung as a KEK, it will automatically have a positive effect on the people of Bitung, and improve the economy and create employment opportunities," he said.

He hoped the KEK will soon be established by the central government, but added that the KEK needs a special managing body to avoid overlapping. (*)
