Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - Several groups of people who cared for the environment are to hold a garbage festival called Grebeg Sampah 2011 on Monday (Feb 21), spokesman of the event said here Sunday.

"We are going to bring a mountain of trash consisting of 4,800 instant noodle plastic wrappers, so it`s going to quite big and interesting," Agus Hartana, the coordinator, said here Sunday.

The trash mountain would be paraded by about 150 people starting from Kusumanegara cemetery to the Yogyakarta town hall to be handed over to the Yogyakarta local administration.

"We`ll name ourselves as rubbish victims in the parade," he said.

According to him, the trash mountain was merely a symbol that it was still posing a serious problem to Yogyakarta, and the administration should have the responsibility to solve it.

"That`s why we bring the mountain to the town hall of Yogyakarta to show off the officials that they have a duty to finish the problem of garbage in thes city," he said.

Agus added that the central and local governments might make plans and rules to reduce trash in stages based on Law no. 18/2008 on Garbage Disposal.

"It hasn`t been done (by the government). The administration also has to facilitate the recycling of trash," he said.

The event would be attended by some environmental organizations, such as Non Governmental Organization Lestari, Indonesian Environmental Forum (Walhi) and Trash Management Network.(*)
