Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The People`s Housing Ministry and the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) are to construct an environmentally friendly apartment for the latter`s students.

"The apartment can be made a facility for learning and developing the character of ITB students," said People`s Housing Minister Suharso Monoarfa after a meeting with ITB Rector Akhmaloka at his office here on Thursday.

Monoarfa said the government hoped the "green" concept to be implemented in the construction of the apartment would encourage the students to learn by living in the building whose design would be made by ITB.

He said he also hoped ITB would engage in studies on the designs and development of environmentally friendly houses or buildings that could save on energy and required less building materials.

The minister said the government will continue to build such green apartments for student dormitories because they can be both as living quarters and objects of study.

The students needs to experience living in high-rise building as familiarization as land would be more and more difficult to acquire in the future.

ITB rector Akhmaloka said there has been a rising demand for student dormitories at ITB as many of the students have come from other cities so that they need decent living quarters in the city where they study.

"We hope that students will feel more secure by living in those rented dormitories so that they can finish their study while they are in the transitional phase of their lives and cognizant of the high learning socio-culture," said Akhmaloka.

He welcomed the introduction of the green concept for the dormitories to be built at ITB.

ITB currently has four student dormitories, Asrama Kidang Pananjung, Asrama Sangkuriang, Asrama Kanayakan and Asrama Bumi Ganesha. The four dormitories have living space for 858 students. ITB currently needs dormitories for about the same number students already enjoy the rented dormitories.
